Retired Husband Syndrome (RHS) affects up to 60% of Japanese women after their husbands retire, causing depression, insomnia, high blood pressure, and anxiety from the sudden full-time presence of a spouse expecting traditional caretaking. Rooted in rigid gender roles—husbands as work-focused strangers, wives as household managers—this disrupts routines and imposes constant emotional/physical strain on women. Currently, divorce is only legal/granted based on specific fault-based grounds and most divorce laws exclude this and other forms of neglect as legal grounds, with appeals routinely rejected, leaving women without recourse.
